Section Two: Using Disability Services and Accommodations


Personal Aides

Under ADA and Section 504, De Anza College is not required to provide personal services or to employ personal aides. Services generally considered to be provided by personal aide include:

  • Storing or administering medications
  • Assisting with personal hygiene or personal clothing
  • Mobility aides (including wheelchairs)
  • Assisting with food or drink
  • Transportation to campus, or
  • Assisting in personal matters

For students who need support with typing, writing, etc…, DSPS offers assistive technology applications to promote self-sufficiency and self-independence. To learn more about Assistive Technology and Assistive Technology Classes

Guidelines on Personal Aides

  • De Anza College DSPS does not provide personal aides or personal services to students with disabilities
  • Classroom attendance at De Anza College is restricted to enrolled students only
  • All students who may require a personal aide to accompany them in the class will need prior authorization
  • In order to request a personal aide, student must be registered with De Anza College DSPS
  • Personal Aide authorizations are granted on a case-by-case basis following the protocols below:
  • Students must contact their DSS Counselor at least three (3) weeks before the quarter begins
  • Students must be able to communicate the reason behind their need for a personal aide in the classroom
