Using Canvas for Your Welcome Day Content?

This page is designed to provide you with tips and resources.

Request A Sample Shell

Communications has created a sample shell you can use to get you started creating your Welcome Day content.

Please contact Alex Harrell to request a shell template. harrellalex@fhda.edu

Create Your Own Welcome Day Shell

We recommend starting with the template mentioned above, but if you want to create your Welcome Day content in your own shell from scratch, you can do so by clicking "Start a New Course" on the Canvas dashboard (lower right side of the screen).

NOTE: All Welcome Day shells will be self-enrollment courses so that we can authenticate users.

Integrate Zoom

To activate Zoom in your course:

  1. Click Settings in your Course Navigation.
  2. Click the Navigation tab at the top of the screen.
  3. Go to the bottom under the list of disabled items. Click and drag Zoom to the top list of enabled items.
  4. Scroll to the bottom and update your course settings.

You will now see Zoom in your course navigation when click Home. The first time you click on Zoom, you may be asked to authorize the use of Zoom in Canvas. At that point, you should have access to the typical features you see in Zoom when you want to create a meeting.

If you need help please access the Zoom integration page, for training/open lab dates and times.

Add Collaborators

If you have multiple people working to develop content for your Welcome Day shell, you can add them as "Teachers" in the course.

  1. Click People in your Course Navigation
  2. Click the +People button
  3. Type lastnamefirstname@fhda.edu
  4. Select Teacher for the role and click Add.
If you receive a message that there is no account for this person, please email onlineeducation@fhda.edu
  5. If you see a window where you have to select the account for the person (because they are associated with several Canvas accounts), please always select their De Anza account.
  6. Click Add again. Anyone you add will receive an email inviting them to the course.

Create Quick Videos

You can use Canvas Studio to create quick, captioned videos in your Welcome Day shell. Videos are great for greetings from faculty or department staff.

Note: Anyone you've added as a collaborator/"teacher" to the course shell will be able to record and embed videos. If faculty or department staff are creating videos in something other than Canvas Studio that you want to upload and embed, please follow the instructions for uploading media in Canvas Studio.

Student Access

Welcome Day Course Shells are set to be Self-Enrollment Courses. Any De Anza student will be able to self-enroll in your Welcome Day shell, and you will see them on the people list when they do so. Self-enrollment courses allow us to track participation in Welcome Day and also help us limit access to Zoom sessions to only authenticated users.

The Office of Communications will be sharing the self-enrollment links on the Welcome Day webpage leading up to the event.
