Commencement Is Sunday, June 29

Students Can Order Graduation Packs Now

Person in Mountain Lion costume with graduating student holding diplomaOrder a student graduation pack – including cap, gown, tassel and diploma cover – and other regalia no later than Monday, June 16, to be sure items arrive in time for the big day. (Visit the campus Bookstore in the RSS Building, or place your order online.)

De Anza will hold its 58th annual commencement on Sunday, June 29, beginning at 3 p.m. in the Santa Clara Convention Center, 5001 Great America Parkway, Santa Clara, California. We'll be posting more information about this year's celebration soon at deanza.edu/graduation/.


This Week

Spring Career Fair Is This Wednesday, May 7

The Spring Career Fair is this Wednesday, May 7, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., in the Sunken Garden. YYou can connect directly with a diverse range of employers. The fair brings together employers from a wide range of industries including business, child development, education, healthcare, automotive, contruction, government, parks and recreation.

Make sure to:

  • Arrive early to maximize time with employers
  • Dress in business casual or any polished, confident look
  • Bring several copies of your resume, a notepad, pen and a bag or backpack for materials
  • Be yourself. Employers value genuine, confident interactions.
  • Ask thoughtful questions about the role, company culture and growth opportunities
  • Collect business cards and take notes to remember key details

Queer and Now Conference Is This Thursday, May 8

Mariah MooreThe 11th annual Queer and Now Conference is this Thursday, May 8, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., in Conference Rooms A&B. This year’s theme is “Navigating the Political Climate and Building Queer Community.” Mariah Moore, policy director for the Transgender Law Center, will be giving a keynote speech. There will also be workshops and a fashion show.

Cupertino Art Exhibition Call for Submissions

Submit Your Art By Next Sunday, May 18

Cupertino Mayor Liang Chao is calling for art submissions for the city’s Multicultural Community Juried Art Exhibition. It will take place on Saturday, May 24, from noon-4 p.m., at Cupertino Community Hall.

The exhibition is designed to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of Cupertino through the creative expression of local youth, adults and seniors. Please submit your art by next Sunday, May 18, at aapicommunityjuriedartshow.artcall.org.

HEFAS Summit Is Next Tuesday, May 13

The 11th annual HEFAS (Higher Education for AB 540 Students) Summit is next Tuesday, May 13, from 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., in Conference Rooms A&B. This year’s theme is “UndocuRise: Resilience in Motion.

The event is dedicated to educating and advocating for undocumented and mixed-status community members. You can learn how to support students by attending a keynote speech and several workshops at the summit.

Blood Drive Is Next Wednesday, May 14

Student Health Services and the Stanford Blood Center are holding a blood drive next Wednesday, May 14, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in Conference Rooms A&B. Each donor who signs up will receive a $15 e-gift card and have the chance to win a VIP San José Earthquakes experience. Schedule a time on the donor portal. VP Search: Finance and Administrative Services

Meet the Finalists Next Week

President Omar Torres invites you to attend open forums next Monday and Tuesday, May 12 and 13, in the Fireside Room, for the two finalists for the position of vice president of Finance and Administrative Services. The biographies for each candidate can be found at deanza.edu/president/vpfas-finalists.

The schedule is:

  • Phyllis Carter – Monday, May 12, 2:15-3:15 p.m.
  • Farhad Sabit – Tuesday, May 13, 2:15-3:15 p.m.

If you are unable to attend, video recordings of both forums will be available at deanza.edu/president/vpfas-finalists, beginning at noon on Wednesday, May 14.

You can submit feedback by filling out a paper form at the open forum or submitting an online form on the webpage, to be posted with the recordings. Feedback should be submitted no later than noon on Monday, May 19.


New Zoom Backgrounds

Jewish American and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Months

Check out the Zoom backgrounds designed by the Office of Communications for Jewish American Heritage Month. You can choose from four different options.

 It's also Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. You can choose from nine different backgrounds designed by the Office of Communications.

All of the options are available for download on the Zoom backgrounds webpage.


Student Spotlight

Athletics Update

Swimmer Joyce Lin in dark windbreakerDe Anza swimmer Joyce Lin won two gold medals – in the 100 Backstroke and 100 Individual Medley – and a silver medal in the 100 Breaststroke at the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) state championships, held last weekend at Santa Rosa Junior College.

Two members of the men’s and women’s Track and Field teams won individual championships at the Northern California regional competition held at Butte College over the weekend. James Estrella won for the men’s 3,000 steeplechase and 10,000-meter event, while Genesis Mailangi won for the women’s hammer event. Both teams will be competing in the state championships this week.

The women’s Badminton team won their conference championship last week and will play this week for the team state championship against Pasadena City College. The Mountain Lions are undefeated this season, with a 14-0 record.


Scholarship for Students on Academic Probation

Strength Through Adversity

The Academic Awareness Program is now accepting applications for their Strength Through Adversity Scholarship, which will be awarded to students on academic probation who demonstrate perseverance in the face of adversity. To be eligible, students must have a GPA below 2.0, have attempted at least 18 units at De Anza and must currently be enrolled full-time or part-time at De Anza. Applications must be submitted through AcademicWorks by Friday, May 30.

Faculty Member’s Article on League for Innovation Website

An article written by Francesca Caparas, English faculty member, and Zachary Cembellin, interim dean of STEM at Foothill College, was featured in the Innovation Showcase section of the League for Innovation in the Community College website. The article discussed the use of technology at the district, including the artificial intelligence professional development series at De Anza. You can read the full article online.
