President's Award for Megan Cheng


Dear Student,

Today we’re introducing Megan Cheng, one of two President's Award recipients for 2024. The President’s Award recognizes students who have demonstrated perseverance in overcoming adversity and achieving their academic goals.

Megan and other major award recipients will be honored at the collegewide graduation collegewide graduation ceremony this Saturday, June 29. We'll be profiling these outstanding students in coming days.

Megan Cheng

After losing her mother to cancer, Megan Cheng wants to help other families cope with the many hurdles and difficult decisions that come with major illness.

The 20-year-old is graduating from De Anza with an associate degree for transfer in Psychology and will study psychology and social welfare at the University of California, Berkeley, this fall. She wants to pursue a career at the intersection of mental health support and medical treatment.

Megan has been an officer in the DASG (De Anza Student Government) and Active Minds, a student club that promotes mental health. Political science instructor Laura Chin, a club adviser, said Megan exemplifies "academic excellence, leadership and unwavering commitment.”

Graduation Tips

De Anza's 57th annual commencement ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. in the Santa Clara Convention Center, 5001 Great America Parkway, Santa Clara. Doors will open at 1 p.m.

  • Free parking is available in the garage behind the convention center. Grads and their guests should plan to arrive early – the doors will open at 1 p.m. – to allow time to park and get ready.
  • After the ceremony, you'll be able to take photos with fun props – including the college mascot, Roary the Mountain Lion.

Important Deadlines

If you're planning to graduate this year, please remember:

  • Send us your photo and message by the end of today – Monday, Jan. 24 – if you'd like to be included in the Graduation Slideshow.
  • Buy your cap and gown in person at the campus Bookstore by this Thursday, June 27. (The deadline has passed to order online and have items shipped in time for graduation.)
  • There is no deadline to participate in the ceremony, but you must apply for your degree by Friday, June 28 in order to have it awarded for spring quarter. (Only students who filed by June 17 will be listed in the printed graduation program.)
