Quarterly Planning: When and how to get started
De Anza operates on a quarterly calendar.
- Our primary quarters are Fall, Winter, and Spring. Standard quarter length is 12-weeks long; and we do offer some short-term classes (start dates published by course in the quarterly schedule).
- Summer is an optional quarter. Classes typically run for 6 or 8-weeks. Summer quarter classes are accelerated. Check the summer schedule for course specific start dates.
Connect with your VRC Specialist/SCO
Your VRC Specialist & School Certifying Officials (SCO)s will help you with your De Anza enrollment and benefit enrollment steps.
- New students using their VA educational benefits should plan follow these steps.
- New students who are on active duty, dependants or veterans that are not using VA educational benefits should plan follow these steps.
Drop-in anytime to the VRC and get started.

Apply (or ReApply) for Quarterly Admission using the De Anza Application
The VRC has student computers, and we can help you complete the online quarterly De Anza Application. You will need an email account to complete the application.
Upon successful completion of the online application, you will receive a "Welcome to De Anza" email within 7 - 10 days. This email will contain your De Anza student ID number, also known as your Campus Wide ID (CWID).
- De Anza's Admissions & Records team may reach out to you via email (daapplications@deanza.edu) if they need more information from you. Please monitor your email.
ProTips
- You will not need to reapply for admission if you continuously take classes each quarter.
- If you stop taking classes, and sit out for one primary quarter (Fall, Winter or Spring), you will need to reapply to De Anza.
Registraton Date & Time
Once your application is successfully processed, you'll be eligible for a Priority Registration group for one quarter.
- Your registration date and time will populate in MyPortal > Student Registration App > Get Date to Register about 3 - 4 weeks before registration for the quarter begins.
Connect with the VRC if you need help with your Priority Registration group
-
- New and continuing students studying with their VA educational benefits should receive priority registeration once your certifying official has received your quarterly cerification form.
- Email veteransda@deanza.edu with your full name and CWID if you have not received priority registration.
Review English or ESL, Math and Science course eligiblity
Review your English (or ESL) and Math course placements; Consider the Science Exam, if needed.
- Most educational goals require new students to satisfy an English (or ESL) and math course requirement.
- At De Anza, new students will receive an English (or ESL) and Math course placement by the Assessment process.
- Review your English and Math course placement in your MyPortal > Student Registration App > View My Placement Results.
- If you need to take CHEM 1A, BIOL 6A or BIOL 40A for your educational goal, and you feel that your chemistry and biology knowledge, skills and abilities are proficient and you'd like to attempt the Science Exam, connect with your VRC counselor for next steps.
Review any Previous College Course Credit & Meet with your VRC Counselor
Review any Previous College Course Credit. Plan to have any College Transcripts Evaluated, and Clearing Prerequisites with your VRC Counselor
- If you attended an accredited college or university in the United States, you should plan to bring a copy of your transcript to your VRC counseling appointment.
At your appointment, your VRC counselor will help you to
- Complete a prerequisite clearance form for any courses you may have already completed at another college.
- Order your official transcripts and send them to De Anza's Evaluations Department for evaluation.
- Its important that you complete this step with a VRC counselor, so that we can help you to track the status of your transcript evaulation request.
- Develop an educational plan in DegreeWorks and choose the approriate courses for your educational goal, major, and Chapter benefits, as appropriate.
Note: If studying at De Anza on VA educational benefits, you must meet with a VRC counselor. VRC counselors receive specialized trainings on VA educational benfits.
With your quarterly education plan created by your VRC counselor, register for your classes!
Your registration date and time allows you to begin adding classes online. You can add classes up until the start of the class.
- If a class is full and the instructor offers a waitlist, you may add yourself to the waitlst.
- Once a class has its first class meeting, you must get an add code from the instructor. An add code is the instructor's permission to add their class late. Only the instructor can issue an add code.
ProTips!
- Read the Footnotes for each class that you're intererested in taking. The Footnotes will describe any special registration steps that you need to take before you attempt to register for the class.
- Do not select a Pass/No Pass grade option without first talking with your VRC counselor.
- Deviating from your VRC counselor created education plan can negatively impact your educational benefits. Meet with your VRC counselor before adding or dropping a class; and always update your SCO on any changes.
