Oral History in the Classroom
12/3/2026
10:30 am to 12:20 pm
Online via Zoom
This workshop covers the practice of oral history (consent, interviewing, listening, recording) and how to adapt it to course assignments in any discipline. Drawing on materials from the Stanford Historical Society and UC Berkeley’s Oral History Center, we’ll approach the interview as a conversation shaped by both interviewer and narrator, not a way of extracting information. You’ll try listening exercises you can use with students, and we’ll cover the practical side: release forms, interview guides and simple tools for recording and transcribing. This is the starting point for faculty member who want to build an oral history or digital storytelling project into a course.
