Board Policy & Administrative Policy 5700 Intercollegiate Athletics (1 st Reading)
    • Discussion ensued

    Winter 2018 Enrollment Update
    • Vice President Espinosa-Pieb (hereafter VP E-P): Winter 2018: 149 class cancellations (Mallory generated numbers) translated into 1,055 students impacted. Because of deans and faculty outreach to impacted students and because of time available for students to find and enroll in other classes (esp those impacted by 12/19 cancellations), all but 68 ultimately enrolled in classes, and some enrolled in more units than they originally were enrolled in. Ultimately, was able to save $1.1 million in costs, BUT this came in the form of sacrifices made by adjunct faculty who lost course teaching assignments.
    • Mary Pape - add code question, discussion regarding potential changes in the add procedures (giving teachers ability to add on the spot, expiring add codes, etc.)
    • Marc Coronado question: “Making” a course = you get to 20 enrolled students; “Filling” a course = if class is capped at 50, 37 seats are filled. If class is capped at 30, then “filling” it would be at 25. Class capped at 25 would be filled at 20.
    • Pres. Murphy: With an enrollment decline, it decreases the base (with a time lag for the state to readjust the base as we are given some time to get back to prior level). The district has been chasing enrollment for the past 3 years using adjunct faculty dollars, and now scheduling needs to be adjusted to the new downsized population. Although this saves money, unfortunately it also represents colleagues not getting assignments.
    • Chris DiLeonardo: Concern that there are students who are taking classes at multiple community colleges. Could we be marketing to our own students to stay only at our campus? VP E-P said yes, we are tracking students who attend the other CCCs, in addition to UC and CSUs.
    • Veronica Avila: Are we losing Latinx students because we are not identified as a Hispanic Serving Institution. Pres. Murphy. and VP E-P: - we are very close, must be 25% of the annualized FTES, and we are at 23%. We are 6% down specifically in Latino students. Rob Mieso (Assoc. VP of Student Services & Outreach Director) has established relationships with Fremont Union high schools and San Jose high schools.
