Change Days and/or Times
Once classes are published to the web, MSI's to change the days and/or times must be submitted via a cancellation of the existing class and the creation of a new class. This is done to ensure that day and/or time changes processed via a change request does not cause student schedule conflicts. -
Class Load & Seat Count
Both the course load and seat count are established through negotiation. Any variations from the established course load and seat count, requires approval from the VP of Instruction. In addition, per the VP of Instruction, enforcement and monitoring of the negotiated course seat counts will be left to the division deans. During schedule production phase, the Scheduling Coordinator will try to place classes that need room assignments in rooms that are appropriate for their seat counts; permission is given by the VP of Instruction to reduce the class seat count if it is assigned to a smaller room. (August 2015) -
Concurrent Section (Large Class)
A concurrent section (large class) is either a double/triple section with double/triple load and seat count. The list of approved classes and rules are in Appendix V of the FA Agreement. -
Hybrid Class
The State defines a hybrid class as a class with face-to-face and online meetings. The online meeting must be less than 50%. To be offered as a hybrid delivery mode, the class must have approval from the Curriculum Committee. Some guidelines to follow when scheduling a hybrid class:
- Section number must end with a "Y".
- Attendance method:
- IW (Independent Weekly) = 12-week class during the fall, winter and spring quarters ONLY.
- ID (Independent Daily) = summer quarter or less than 12-week class during the fall,
winter and spring quarters.
- Footnote stating when the class meets face-to-face and when it meets online. See Footnote Information for example.
- Section number must end with a "Y".
-
Less than 50-minute Class
Classes are not permitted to be scheduled for less than 50-minutes (Title 5 § 58023) because apportionment cannot be collected otherwise. -
Online Class
The State defines an online class as a class that meets 50% or more online. To be offered as an online delivery mode, the class must have approval from the Curriculum Committee. Some guidelines to follow when scheduling an online class:
- Section number must end with a "Z":
- Summer starts with 61Z then jumps to 65Z, 66Z, etc...
- Fall starts with 62Z then jumps to 65Z, 66Z, etc...
- Winter starts with 63Z then jumps to 65Z, 66Z, etc...
- Spring starts with 64Z then jumps to 65Z, 66Z, etc...
- Attendance method:
- IW (Independent Weekly) = 12-week class during the fall, winter and spring quarters ONLY.
- ID (Independent Daily) = summer quarter or less than 12-week class during the fall, winter and spring quarters.
- Footnote stating how the course will be delivered online. See Footnote Information for example.

Noncredit Class
Noncredit classes are designed to help students gain general knowledge, improve math or English proficiency, learn new skills, upgrade existing skills, enrich understanding about a topic, develop personal interests and prepare for college-level credit course work.
Facts about noncredit class:
- Non degree-applicable
- Not required to have grades
- Non-transcriptable
- Non-transferable
- Is repeatable
- Open to students 18 years or older
Requirements when scheduling a noncredit class:
- Effective Fall 2023, use "P" for attendance method if fully on-campus with days and times, use "I7" for all other modalities. Instructor contact/office-hour of 0.5 hour/week for 6 hours/quarter must be added in Banner for non-credit classes with I7 attendance method. Inclusion of Out-of-Class hours for all "I7" attendance method is on hold, pending discussion and approval by the VPI.
- Class cannot have Special Approval or be closed off.
- Seat count cannot be zero.
- Footnote stating what the class is and who should register for it. See Footnote Information for example.

Section Designators
The section number of a class is comprised of 2-3 characters. It may contain an alpha character. Alpha characters in the section number provides information on the type of class (hybrid, online, off-campus, weekend, etc...) it is. These alpha characters in the section number, besides providing information on the type of class are also used on college reports and search filters.

Short Duration Class
Short Duration is a class that meets less than 12-weeks.
During the fall, winter and spring quarters, if the face-to-face class meet less than 12 weeks, they must be coded with a “D” (Daily) attendance method. Daily attendance accounting method classes can only collect hours for the days and times the classes meet; they are not reimbursed for holidays. Since classes must comply with Title 5 and follow the hours, units and course objectives specified in the course outline, short duration classes must adjust the start and end time to make up for the missed meetings due to holidays. Here are some guidelines to follow:
- Use 55, 56, 57, 58, etc. as the section number.
- Attendance method:
- D (Daily) = summer quarter face-to-face class OR less than 12-week class that are face-to-face during the fall, winter and spring quarters.
- ID (Independent Daily) = summer quarter hybrid or online OR less than 12-week hybrid or online class during the fall, winter and spring quarters.
- Footnote stating when the class starts and ends and how many weeks it meets. See Footnote Information for example.
- Use 55, 56, 57, 58, etc. as the section number.
-
Special Programs
Per Title 5, classes must be open to all students for registration. The only restriction that can be placed on classes are course prerequisites or requirements specified in the course outline. Restriction(s) on a class to a specific group of students in special retention and success programs, such as Learning Community (LinC), First Year Experience (FYE), Puente and Umoja are allowed as long as a large portion of the same class is open to the general student population.
State and college requirements for special program classes:
- Section number must end or contain the appropriate alpha character for the special program
- Registration restriction (2 options):
- Indicate a restriction code in the Special Approval field of SSASECT Banner form. This option requires clearance by division or A&R in the SFASRPO form for each class.
- Indicate a restriction code in the Cohort Restriction field of SSARRES Banner form. This option allows any students with the matching Cohort Restriction code in their profile to register for the class.
- Footnote stating what special program it belongs to, how students can enroll and contact information. See Footnote Information for example.
-
TBA Hours
The Vice President of Instruction issued a mandate on December 5, 2017 requiring all NON-Online classes to clearly spell out the actual meeting days and times. Effective winter 2018 quarter, classes can no longer list “TBA” for days and times, unless it is an online class. This policy applies to all face-to-face classes, including the following types: internship, externship, special projects, practicum and clinical. Exception to this rule requires approval from the Vice President of Instruction. Complete details of this policy can be found here. -
