Video Highlights Journalism Program

De Anza’s latest career video features current students and working journalists talking about the many ways the college's Journalism program prepares them for jobs in that field.

Students in the program learn important skills in the classroom and gain valuable experience by writing for student publications, said Stephanie Lam, a Journalism alum now working as a local news reporter, who is interviewed in the video.

Laura Wenus“It really is shoe-leather journalism that you learn here,” added Laura Wenus, a De Anza alum now working as a multimedia journalist. “The skills that I learned here … as well as some of the relationships that I built here, they have really served me well.”

Others stressed the program's opportunities for hands-on learning with such tools as editing software, video cameras and audio equipment. Journalism chair Farideh Dada also noted that skills taught in the program “are applicable in all majors and all fields – including critical thinking, meeting deadlines, leadership, media literacy and so many other skills.”

“Journalism is one of those kind of underrated, hidden majors” that opens up “different opportunities and interests that you might never know that you had,” added Lam.

The video is the latest in a series highlighting De Anza’s Career Technical Education programs. Previous installments have included a career training overview and videos highlighting the Business Administration, Design and Manufacturing Technologies, Health Technologies, Film and Television and Automotive Technology programs. Future installments will feature other programs and groups of related offerings.

The videos are developed by the Office of Communications in collaboration with the Career Technical Education Division and individual departments. They can be seen on the college YouTube channel, the Career Training website and on social media.
