De Anza Mascot Change Measure
The De Anza College mascot has been the Don for the 52-year history of the college. This measure asks De Anza students whether or not they want to change the mascot. Future discussions about choosing a new mascot would depend on the results of this measure. If approved, there will be a thoughtful strategic plan to identify a new mascot, through an inclusive process in which all students, faculty, staff and alumni will have an opportunity to voice their opinion.
What is it?
The decision to change or keep De Anza College's current mascot, the Don.
Who does it affect?
The entire De Anza College community
Financial Impact:
Funds would need to be identified through the college to make any necessary changes.
Pro Arguments:
- The current mascot, the Don, has well-documented roots in colonialism and a racist past. The term is associated with conquistadors, who conquered territory and people, using violent means. The Don is considered especially offensive to Native American and Indigenous communities.
- This change would provide a significant opportunity for outreach and marketing to prospective students, such as local high school students and athletes.
- Because of the historic connotations, there is currently no accepted, identifiable mascot or graphic logo available for Athletics teams.
- A new mascot would more appropriately reflect the changing times and better represent De Anza College.
- A new mascot would reinvigorate and increase school spirit.
Con Arguments:
- There are costs associated with replacing any equipment, clothing, and marketing materials that currently display the word "Don," along with staff time required for implementing the change.
- Alumni may have an attachment to the current mascot and its history with the college.
