Outreach to Middle Schools
De Anza College is working on building more relationships with local middle schools to increase awareness of college opportunities. We aim to introduce middle school students to our dual enrollment program, which becomes available to them once they begin high school. Outreach to middle schools for the dual enrollment program can be a very effective way to engage younger students, introduce them to the opportunities available through community colleges, and potentially increase both their academic achievement and their college-going aspirations. Middle school students are at a critical point in their academic development, and if approached correctly, dual enrollment can offer them a head start on their academic and career goals.
Below are some ideas for effective outreach strategies to support middle school students and help them learn about the benefits and opportunities of going to college:
1. Introduce the importance of community college
- School Presentations: Hold presentations during school-wide events to introduce De Anza. Focus on how it works, the benefits, and the exciting opportunities we offer. We can also use videos or testimonials from current students who have benefited from dual enrollment to introduce them to this program.
- Interactive Workshops: Organize hands-on workshops where middle school students can experience what college-level work is like.
2. Engage middle school parents and families
- Parent Information Nights: Parents play a crucial role in decision-making. Host events where parents can learn about the benefits of dual enrollment, how it works, the financial aspects (tuition discounts, free courses), and how it helps their children get a jumpstart on their careers.
- Flyers: Create flyers that explain dual enrollment, highlight success stories, and give practical steps for how students can sign up. Include FAQs about the program, eligibility requirements, and the advantages of earning college credits.
3. Collaborate with middle school teachers and/or counselors
- Workshops for Educators: Teachers and counselors play a pivotal role in encouraging students to take on these opportunities. We could start offering presentations for middle school educators on the value of dual enrollment and how they can incorporate information about these programs into their curriculum. We should also consider inviting them to our annual High School Partners Conference.
4. Create fun, age-appropriate events
- College Campus Tours for Middle School Students: Offer college campus visits where middle school students can explore the facilities, meet faculty, and get a feel for the college environment. Make these tours engaging with hands-on activities, such as meeting with academic advisors or participating in interactive college-related games.
5. Provide clear pathways and support systems
- Dual Enrollment Ambassadors: Recruit students who have successfully participated in dual enrollment to act as ambassadors or mentors. These students can speak directly to middle schoolers, share their experiences, and answer questions about what dual enrollment is really like.
- Dedicated Counselor or Advisor: Ensure that there is a dedicated person at De Anza who can help middle school students and their families navigate the dual enrollment process. This could be a designated advisor who can explain eligibility requirements, application steps, and the benefits of the program.
6. Leverage technology to make the program accessible
- Social Media Campaign: Use social media platforms like Instagram, and TikTok to engage middle school students and their families. Share content like behind-the-scenes looks at dual enrollment classes, interviews with current dual enrollment students, and tips for getting involved.
7. Showcase career pathways
- Industry Connection: Highlight how dual enrollment is aligned with career paths that are in high demand (e.g., healthcare, information technology, etc.).

Plan Timeline
Winter 2024
Spring 2024
Towards the end of the school year the Office of Outreach should be connecting with the middle school counselors again to find out if any of their students are interested in enrolling as a dual student during their freshman year so then we can connect directly with them to walk them through the process.
For our district, students must be already in high school to join the dual enrollment program, this will be during the Fall Quarter.
Fall 2024
By the start of Fall 2024, the Outreach Specialist should start reaching out to middle school counselors to find out if they might be interested in hosting a tabling event or a presentation for their students.
As of November 6th, Outreach has visited the following Middle Schools for tabling events:
- LeyVa Middle School
- DCP El Camino
We are currently not reaching out to other middle schools due to capacity but we are trying to accept any invitations we receive from these schools.
