JAPN 2
Elementary Japanese (Second Quarter)

Course Description

This course is a continuation of the introduction to the Japanese language and culture. Emphasis will be placed on developing beginner-level proficiency appropriate for the second quarter in the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will also deepen their understanding of sociocultural knowledge, which plays a crucial role in effective communication in Japanese. Japanese will remain the primary language of instruction. Oral practice will be emphasized and supported by a growing understanding of language structures. In addition to continued practice with the two Japanese syllabic writing systems, hiragana and katakana, students will review the initial 29 kanji (Sino-Japanese characters) and learn 57 additional kanji.
