Introduction to Fundamentals of Writing, Reading, and College Preparation
Course Description
This course introduces students to major conventions of college-level Standard English writing. The course aids in students' development of basic skills in the reading and writing processes. The course includes a practice of focused and purposeful writing in several formats to diverse audiences with a variety of sentence structures responding to, engaging with, and/or inspired by written or visual texts. This course introduces students to college preparation, including navigating studenthood, campus resources, and future success.

EWRT 501A.01Y: NONCREDIT 6-week class, beginning Sept. 21, 2026. EWRT 501A and EWRT 501B are non-credit, 2-unit classes with no prerequisites, no letter grades, no cost, and no barriers to enrollment. These classes serve: recent high school graduates, returning students, first-generation college students, and anyone who wants to build confidence in reading and writing before — or alongside — their college coursework. These courses also support students pursuing transfer, an AA, or simply personal and professional growth. Students can take one or both, and completing both earns students a “Writing and Reading Skills for College and Career Success Certificate.” HYBRID, meets on-campus and online. This class meets each week on campus and online as noted in the class listing. Students must have access to a computer, the internet and an individual email address. Most De Anza classes will use the Canvas course management system. We recommend a laptop or desktop computer to successfully complete the course; a tablet or phone may not be adequate for all assignments and tests.
