Community College Survey of Student Engagement Presentation

The CCSSE is administered in the spring quarter to credit students and gathers information about their overall college experience. The survey focuses on educational practices and student behaviors associated with higher levels of learning persistence and completion.

Some information from the survey -

How would you evaluate your entire educational experience at De Anza?

82% of student stated that they had a good or excellent experience at De Anza.

How likely is it that the following issues would cause you to withdraw from class or from this college?

46% of respondents stated working full-time could likely or very likely cause them to withdraw, while 42% cited lack of finances.

Service Area Updates

Veronica Avila – Getting ready for the SLO Convention on April 17th. In their next newsletter they will be featuring our Occupational Training Institute (OTI). They have found that students are underutilizing the food pantry that we currently have on campus. She is open to ideas/suggestions to increase health and wellness education on campus.

Outreach – They will be hosting their first Financial Literacy workshop coming up on Jan. 27th in the Campus Center. They will also have free tax preparation services for students coming up as well. They are opening a food pantry for the entire De Anza student population that will have a soft launch in winter and should be fully running by spring quarter.

Counseling – Will be working on some efficiency issues and making improvements for the spring quarter session.

DSP&S – Will proctor final exams in Conference Room A & B this quarter due to space limitations.

Student Development – Common Applications are coming in and there seems to be a lot of confusion on what area takes care the different parts required in the application.

Suggestion: maybe have the Transfer Center take the lead on guiding students how to properly fill it out and where they need to go.

EOPS – They now have about 680 students total in the program, 63 students new this winter quarter. Their appointments are booked solid for about the next two weeks for counseling and advising. They are having a higher rate of kept appointments as well.

Financial Aid – They will be working with Education Credit Management Corp.(ECMC) to keep students from defaulting on their student loans. We have about a 17% default rate right now.

SSSP Hiring Updates

  • The opening that was in General Counseling will be assigned to the BHES Division
  • Outreach will have two Counseling positions opening as well to work with African Ancestry and Latino students on campus.
  • Athletics will be adding a new Counselor position.
  • Outreach will have a new Administrative Assistant I and Outreach Assistant
  • The researcher position will open using Equity funds.

Updates from Teams

SSSP

1. Orientation - Spatafore, Ranck

The team has worked on the timeline to get the online orientation ready for spring quarter.

2. Assessment - Mieso 

The retesting study has been completed for this quarter. 215 students were invited to retake their placement test and 13 came in for the retest. Another study will be done for spring quarter to see if they can improve the turnout and acquire more data.

There are many requests from High Schools for us to conduct placement tests and orientations on campus this year.

3. Ed Plan – LeBleu-Burns

The committee has had many discussions and has created immediate and overall goals. Michele presented to the Counseling Division meeting this week to help facilitate the process.

One action item: we need to find out the new students who still need a Comprehensive Ed Plan in DegreeWorks so we do not miss the funding deadline for these students.

4. Follow-up/At Risk Students - Burgos 

Burgos is meeting next week to discuss SARS codes and how the data is currently being recorded and reported. Since the information may not be recorded accurately it is difficult to assess the current effectiveness of the probation process (updated via email).

5. Technology – Mandy

There is nothing new to report at this time. Mandy will look into SmartHires to see if this is something we may want to use on campus.
