Meet Brian Murphy
Brian Murphy is president of De Anza College in Cupertino, California. He previously was executive director of the San Francisco Urban Institute at San Francisco State University, and served as chief consultant to the California Legislature’s review of the state’s Master Plan for Higher Education.
Murphy has a bachelor’s degree from Williams College and a master’s degree and doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley – all in political science. He has taught political theory at San Francisco State University, Santa Clara University and the University of California, Santa Cruz. He also has served on numerous public commissions and nonprofit boards.
A key focus of Murphy's presidency is the preparation of students to be active, involved citizens who are committed to transforming their communities. This vision led to the creation of De Anza's Vasconcellos Institute for Democracy in Action (VIDA), formerly the Institute for Community and Civic Engagement. Murphy also was instrumental in developing The Democracy Commitment, a national project aimed at ensuring that every community college student has an education in democratic practice.
