Congratulations, Veteran Graduates!

Message From President Holmes

Dear Veteran Graduates,

President HolmesWe’re very proud to celebrate the military veterans, reservists and their dependents who are graduating or transferring from De Anza College this year.

Success in college always takes hard work, and we understand that the transition to civilian life can pose further challenges. At De Anza, we’re pleased to support our veteran students with academic counseling and other services available through our Veterans Resource Center.

We’re grateful for the support we’ve received from the Rotary Club of Cupertino, the Foothill-De Anza Foundation and others – on campus and in our neighboring communities – which made it possible this year to create the new "Stronger Together" mural outside the Veterans Center, and to provide book vouchers, coffee and snacks, the use of a printer and other amenities for our veteran students.

To our student veterans: Thank you for your service to our country. We’re honored that you chose De Anza to pursue your academic goals for the future. We wish you all the best, and congratulations!

With appreciation,
Lloyd A. Holmes
President, De Anza College

I would like to thank the counselors of the Veterans Center at De Anza – specifically Lan Truong, who worked with me for over three years to help me reach my goal of being accepted into the De Anza RN program.

If you are a student vetran, and you have not contacted the De Anza student Veterans center, you are doing yourself a great disservice.

First and foremost, I want to give a big thank you to Lan for mentoring me over the last decade while I navigated through school while building my family. Without you, I would have been lost!

To my father and the B-25 Wolfpack Unit who sacrificed so much both mentally and physically, my gratitude and love for you all is eternal. Be proud!

| wanted to thank my grandparents, Francisco and Guadalupe Cortez, for helping to raise me.

They migrated from Mexico in the late 1950’s to San José and worked hard in agriculture when Santa Clara county was mostly farmland and orchards alongside my aunts and uncles. They lived through tough times in history including the Great Depression, WW2, Vietnam, Korean War, Cold War, gulf war, IOF AND OEF.

I earned two degrees for both of them and will continue to do great things to help out my community in business in the future.

Put in the hard work and never give up on yourself.

First and foremost I would like to thank my family for always being there for me and always being supportive. Without them I would not be who I am and where I am today.

Secondly, a huge thanks to Lan and Bertha for all the academic support and understanding, you both made my transition to civilian/college student life seamless. I attribute much of my success at De Anza to those two outstanding ladies and their continued support to veterans like myself.

Semper Fi.

Hello troops! The transition from military to civilian life was not easy. It takes time to adjust, so be patient, work hard and you'll achieve anything.

I would like to thank my family and friends for their support and encouragement on accomplishing this goal and the rest of my goals that are still in progress.

I would also like to thank the staff at De Anza for making it easy for veterans to apply and become successful in our academic goals. All my professors and our veteran counselors have been amazing. They deserve a huge shoutout because, without their strong support and aid, college would be stressful.

My fellow veterans, I wish you all great success and happiness. We did it! De Anza Class of 2023!

Thank you to my family for the love and support to pursue higher education later in life. My wife has given me so much time to study and work on all my classes, and I appreciate it very much. She has handled so much with our kids and extended family; I am lucky to have her. With all her love, support, and positive reinforcement, she helped me through the dark times when I didn't think I was doing well enough.

My brother, a Marine veteran, helped motivate me to pursue education after a long gap in employment. He showed me with his actions that grunts like us could be highly successful in academic spaces. I can't believe we're both infantry and were accepted into universities our childhood teachers wouldn't even imagine we could accomplish.

Ma, thank you for your love and support and for not giving up on me. I can't believe I made it to the school you always dreamed I would attend. Thank you for believing in me.

Thank you to the De Anza Veterans Resource Center for all their hard work and support on and off campus. After serving as an infantryman and experiencing hardships, education seemed impossible. Going back to school after 13 years was a considerable challenge, but every experience I had fueled me as a student. Lan, thank you for supporting my applications and helping me get the accommodations I did not even know I needed. I will always remember what you have done for me, and I greatly appreciate all of your help.

To the service members that will read this, if I can, I believe you can also do it. I had a 1.6 GPA in high school, had several D's and F's in college for the first time, and had a long gap in employment. I accepted my fate as a disabled combat veteran that dwelled in the past. Finally, I acknowledged what bothered me the most and decided to act just like I did when I witnessed the Twin Towers fall. We are the less than 1% of the American population that takes the oath; you are more than capable of pursuing education and achieving success in anything. Do not self-select yourself out of any opportunities because you deserve to have them!

Leaning into the experience I received in the Army and the goals I have because of it carved a unique path forward in the transfer process. De Anza's faculty and staff are also very flexible and understanding in terms of National Guard commitments. All told, the other vets and students have been a fantastic community. Fight on!

I took a longer path and faced many obstacles to reach this point. I rewrote my journey multiple times. My significant achievements include being the first woman in my family to graduate high school, becoming a Marine, earning an associate degree in business administration, and getting accepted into San José State University for a major in business administration with a focus on data analytics.

I owe my success to the support of my parents, my Marines, the guidance of Bertha, Lan, and the unwavering belief of my loving wife. I hope whoever reads this is inspired to persevere and remember that it's never too late to chase a new dream.

I'm happy and proud to be the first in my family to make it through college, only one step closer to a bachelor's degree. Everybody who works at the Veterans Resource Center has been an absolutely huge help and I can't thank them enough for helping me navigate college.

For everyone who was in the Navy, going through A-school and other training schools has been a big help in preparing for the study and schoolwork ethic required to be here. Remember how you studied and all the tricks that helped then, they have been useful to me for the two years I've been at De Anza. Shout out to Lan!!!

I would like to thank Ms. Truong for all her assistance in guiding me through my time here at De Anza. She was an invaluable pillar of support, and I couldn't have done it without her.

I would like to congratulate my fellow veterans on their academic accomplishments. Know that I love you and am proud of you all.

I think back and remember the times during my service when I daydreamed of a future life as a civilian and college student: Sitting in a hasty fighting position in the pouring rain as I pulled my 0200 guard shift during a field problem. The roaring engine of a C-130 and my entire body aching in pain from the 100 or so pounds of gear I had rigged to jump. The rush of adrenaline as the plane and jumpmaster gave us the green light. The violent wind as I exited the aircraft and the sudden calm as my canopy deployed. I hit the ground, hard. I lie on the ground for a second and think "I should have gone to college."

My time here at De Anza was short and stressful, but I leave here with very fond memories. A lot of those memories were made in the Veterans Resource Center, mostly due to the colorful cast of characters that live there, but especially due to the amazing counselors who are the lifeblood of the VRC.

I appreciate all who have helped me overcome this obstacle in my journey. A special thanks goes to my wife who pushes me to be better every single day. I hope that my next chapter is as memorable as the last, and I hope all of my fellow veterans have a special experience similar to mine.

I would like to thank all my fellow Marines for pushing me to be my very best, even when times were the toughest.

Having to support myself from scratch in Silicon Valley is not easy: $0 in the bank, multiple jobs, moving into a bedroom-sized studio, and going to college full time is not easy. But it is the fellow veterans and Marines who kept telling me that I can do it, that pushed me to the end. And for that, I am forever grateful.

The old saying, “you cannot teach an old dog a new trick,” is a false saying. I am a prime example that if you put your mind and heart on a goal you will achieve it. By no means will it be easy. The road is full of all types of obstacles, but as veterans, we already have overcome many obstacles and we have succeeded.

On this education journey I have been on, I would not have been able to achieve much without the help of De Anza’s Veterans Resource Center and its counselors. Thank you, Lan and Bertha for the encouragement and guidance you have given me and the other veterans.

Thank you, other veterans, for putting up with my old wise jokes and stories. It has truly been a experience I plan on bringing with me when I transfer to San Francisco State University, hoping they have as good a veterans center as De Anza has.

Remember that once a Marine always a Marine! We are the future. Remember our core values that the military taught us, and let’s make a difference in this world! Semper Fidelis!

The path ahead is always filled with fear and doubt, but don't let it overcome you – overcome it. The military was a steppingstone in my life that I am eternally grateful for.

I have to also thank my veterans’ counselor, Lan, who has helped me in college since Day 1. She and the other veterans’ counselors do a great service for those who have served.

Finally, I want to thank all of you, whether active, reserve or veteran. We may come from different branches and have different experiences, but the overall mission is the same: United we stand for the greater good.
