Careers in Automotive Technology
Automotive technicians help keep America rolling—literally. Their primary duty is to identify and repair problems with cars and trucks, but they also perform the general maintenance that keeps vehicles running in good condition. Technicians work in settings from independent repair shops to new car dealerships, and they can apply everything from a large, generalized knowledge of auto repair to specialized training specific to components such as brakes, transmissions, engines, electronics and air conditioning. The number of employment opportunities in California for automotive technicians is expected to increase faster than most fields in the next few years, at a rate of 21.9% for the period 2002-2012 (Source: Labor Market Info www.labormarketinfo.edd.ca.gov).

Necessary Education and Skills for Career Success
Students and instructor work on an engine. All technicians should be able to read and understand repair manuals, to work according to set standards, and to learn new service and repair techniques in the ever-changing world of automotive design and technology. Technicians rely on a variety of tools and equipment to perform repairs, so access to and experience with these tools can greatly improve their chance at success. The particular tools required, as well as the knowledge applied by the automotive technician, will vary depending on the type of work performed.
