Minimum Eligibility Requirements* for Admission as a Transfer Student

What is a transfer student to the CSU?

If you have completed college units after the summer immediately following your graduation from high school, you are considered a transfer student.

What is the CSU definition of a CA Community College Transfer Student?

• Students who have completed 60 or more transferable semester college units (90 or more quarter units) at the CA community college are considered upper-division transfer students to CSU.
  

• Students are urged to come to the CSU fully GE certified and with lower-division major requirements completed.

*Students who have completed less than 90 quarter units are considered lower-division transfer students and must meet requirements similar to those students coming from high school. See www.csumentor.edu for limitations and guidelines. Contact your campus of choice to determine whether there are limits on admission as a lower division transfer.

What are the minimum admission requirements as an upper division transfer to the CSU from a community college?

You are eligible for admission with 90 or more transferable quarter units if you:

1. Have a college grade point average of 2.00 or better (2.4 for nonresidents of California) in all transferable college units attempted

2. Are in good standing at the last college or university attended, i.e., you are eligible to re-enroll.

3. Complete or will complete prior to transfer at least 45 CSU transferable quarter units of GE with a grade of C or better as part of the 90 transferable qtr. units (courses numbered 1-99 at De Anza generally CSU transferable) required to be an upper division transfer.

The 45 transferable quarter units of GE include each of the following courses completed with a C ( 2.0 ) or better:

 SPCH 1 or SPCH 10

 EWRT 1A or ESL 5 (for students whose native language is not English)

One approved math course. Choose from:   MATH 1A, 1B, 1C,1D, 2A, 2B, 10, 11, 12, 22, 23, 44, 46, 49A, 49B, 51, EDUC 46

 A critical thinking course: Choose from: EWRT 2, PHIL 3, PHIL 4, PHIL 5, PHIL 7, SPCH 8, SPCH 9, SPCH 15

• The filing period for Fall begins October 1 of the academic year prior to transfer. October 1-November 30 is the priority CSU application filing period. If you are applying for an impacted major or to an impacted campus, you must apply during this window of time.

When will all applicants need to apply online?

Prospective transfer applicants should apply electronically via www.csumentor.edu. Submitting an application online expedites the application processing time for each campus.

What if I don't have access to a computer to apply online?

Computers are available at De Anza in the Open Media Lab and at public libraries. Students are required to apply online. To download a paper copy of the CSU Application select the "Undergraduate Admission Application" from the CSUMentor Web site.

If I fulfill these minimum requirements for admission will I be guaranteed admission to the CSU?

You will likely be admitted to at least one of the CSU campuses you apply to -- however, it may not necessarily be to the CSU campus of your choice. Transfer admission is highly selective for some campus and specific majors. See CSU Screening Criteria for a list of campus major programs that are impacted and which have additional admission criteria above the minimum eligibility requirements.

If I complete these minimum requirements for admission will I have to submit my high school transcript for review?

If you have completed the minimum eligibility requirements for admission as an upper division transfer student to the CSU, you do not have to submit your high school transcript. However, there may be exceptions to this rule and a campus may request that you send a high school transcript.

When should I send college transcripts?

The campus to which you are applying will inform you when to submit official transcripts. At that time you should request that official transcripts to be sent directly from all colleges and universities that you previously attended, even if no coursework was completed. Transcripts must be received in sealed envelopes directly from each institution that you attended.

How do I know which CSU campuses are open for admission?

• Go to CSU Application Status
• Check with De Anza's Counseling or Transfer Center or with University Admissions

What advice can you give me regarding the admission requirement to the CSU?

• Complete English and Math as early as possible
• While completing minimum admission requirements, focus on completing major preparation course work whenever possible.
• For Fall transfer, complete all required courses by end of spring quarter.

Note: Some CSU campuses will admit transfer students based on courses "in progress," and some will not.  Please consult the specific campus(es) or their published or electronic materials for specific campus information.

Do transfer students have to take placement tests in English & Math at the CSU?

Upper-division transfer students who have completed English composition (EWRT 1A or ESL 5 at De Anza) and a college level math course (see list above) with grades of C or better are exempt from the English Placement Test (EPT) and the Entry Level Mathematics Test (ELM). Upper-division transfer students must complete both an English composition and college level mathematics prior to enrolling at a CSU campus.

Lower division transfer students (those with 89 or fewer transferable quarter units) will be required to take the tests if they are not exempt based on their SAT or ACT scores (see the freshman requirements section on EPT/ELM exemptions at www.csumentor.edu) or if they have not completed the appropriate English composition and college level math course with grades of C or higher.

NOTE: The following is not a transfer requirement, but is helpful information. At San Jose State all students must complete SJS's English 1B before taking the WST (a writing exam required to enroll in any upper division General Education classes). If De Anza students take either EWRT 1B or EWRT 2 at De Anza, the SJS English 1B prequisite to taking the WST will be waived.

Which CSUs offer a Guaranteed Admission Program to De Anza students?

CSU East Bay (formerly Hayward), CSU Monterey Bay, and San Jose State. Go to Guaranteed Admission for guidelines and timelines, for procedures to submit a TAA, and for a form to request further information.

Where can I get further information regarding admission, transfer and finances to the CSU?

Caution: The final responsibility for a successful transfer program rests with the student. Resources online and at De Anza College are designed to assist you in getting as accurate information as possible. This information changes frequently, however, and can impact your admission to the university. It is highly advised that you meet periodically with advisors at both De Anza College and at the prospective university to confirm your choice of classes and develop an educational plan.
