What You Can Do

  • Take a class about sustainability
Check out the many sustainability-related courses offered at De Anza. Learn how you can incorporate sustainability into your major area of study, whether it's business, science, humanities or creative arts.
  • Transportation
Walk, ride a bike, carpool or take public transit to De Anza. Visit our commute alternatives Web page to learn more.
  • Meals
Choose local and/or organic foods. Eat less meat. Shop at a farmer's market. Join a community garden. Use biodegradable plates and utensils, or better yet, bring your own reusable fork.
  • Energy
Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Use natural light and warmth from the sun whenever possible. When it's hot, enjoy cool shade from a tree. Dress in layers so that you can be comfortable inside your classrooms and workspace.
  • Waste Minimization
Recycling and water at De Anza
Reject. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Rethink how your purchases impact the environment. Use a reusable container for your water. Choose products made from recycled materials. Compost what you can.
  • Pollution Control
Reject toxins. Choose to use natural products. Properly dispose compact flourescent light bulbs and e-Waste items, such as batteries, cell phones and computer parts.
  • Water Use
Refill a reusable bottle with water from the tap or drinking fountain. Choose low-flush when appropriate on dual-mode toilets.
  • Landscaping
Take time each day to appreciate your natural surroundings. Listen for the tune of songbird. Enjoy the seasonal changes of the trees. Visit the Environmental Studies Area to learn about different California native habitats.
  • Be Engaged
Be empowered by staying informed on sustainability issues. Make your voice heard. Be the change you want to see in the world. Join a sustainability club or committee at De Anza and/or organization off campus. Sign up for an environmental news service.
  • Share Your Ideas
Let us know what you think. How can we be more sustainable at De Anza? Email a CEAG committee member with your ideas. Or better yet, come to a CEAG meeting.
