Types of TutoringDrop-in TutoringDrop-in tutoring is ideal if you need short-term help or if you have brief questions for a tutor. The time limit for drop-in tutoring is 30 minutes per session.
To use drop-in tutoring, first submit a Tutee Application. Individual TutoringIndividual tutoring is ideal for students who need one-on-one assistance for the entire quarter. You and your tutor will meet in the Tutorial Center once or twice a week, up to two hours each week. During this time, you can work on areas and topics that you need help with and learn strategies to help you study the subject better on your own. Depending on tutor availability and budget constraints, we can't guarantee that we can provide an individual tutor for each student who requests one, but we will do our best. It helps to apply early in the quarter. Please be sure to read our Policies and Procedures to know what to expect and how to prepare for individual tutoring sessions. Group TutoringNon-credit group tutoring or Supplemental Instruction (SI) is offered in conjunction with some courses or by arrangement with the course instructor. A tutor who has already taken the course and been recommended by the instructor leads the group. During the meeting time, you will discuss class material, participate in activities with your classmates, and learn strategies to study the subject better on your own. Regular attendance is usually required for group tutoring, though drop-in groups are available for some courses. Non-credit group tutoring is different from our 1/2 unit Adjunct Skills groups, which require regular attendance and completion of a lab requirement. Online TutoringSpecially trained online writing tutors provide free help through our Online Writing Assistance Center. Students in any De Anza class may submit questions or essays, and tutors will respond within 48 hours. As with in-person tutoring, tutors will not correct or edit papers, but will look at organization and any other area in which you request help, identify patterns of errors, and point you to online resources that can help you improve your grammar and writing. To participate in online tutoring, first submit a Tutee Application. |
