- Creative Arts Thriving at De Anza
De Anza College — with its Creative Arts programs thriving and construction of its Visual and Performing Arts Center well under way — once again is the only community college represented in the Student Film Competition at the Cinequest Film Festival.

- Caballero Delivers Keynote Speech at Graduation
De Anza College's 40th annual commencement will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 30, at the college's Outdoor Events Arena. State Assemblymember Anna M. Caballero will serve as keynote speaker.

- De Anza College Student Films at Cinequest
Two student films produced in the De Anza College Film/TV program have been selected for Cinequest Film Festival 17: "The Reason" by Michael Chance and "The Truth of the Matter" by Car Nazzal. Both Chance and Nazzal are from San Jose.
- Hundreds to Attend De Anza Youth Leadership Conference
More than 200 high school and college students will converge at De Anza College for its second annual youth leadership conference, Youth Voices United for Change.

- De Anza College Receives $1.08 million Nursing Education Gift
De Anza College and Community Foundation Silicon Valley today announced a $1.08 million gift through the foundation's Silicon Valley Scholars Scholarship Fund that will enable De Anza to educate an additional 66 nurses over the next five years.

- De Anza's Night of Magic Raises $70,000
Students of De Anza College will be the beneficiaries of community support
for the college's 12th annual "A Night of Magic" gala, with the
$70,000 in proceeds funding computers and other technology equipment for the
new Student and Community Services Building and projects to support student
success, such as peer advising and parent-student orientations.

- Rebecca Danielle Johanson Receives
a $20,000 Scholarship to UCSC
Rebecca Danielle Johanson, a De Anza College student and Sunnyvale resident,
is one of 12 regional community college students who will receive $20,000
scholarships to enroll at UC Santa Cruz this fall.
- Registration for Summer Classes Now Under
Way
Almost 1,000 course sections in a wide variety of disciplines will be
offered at De Anza College this summer, and the majority of them will be taught
during a six-week period. Both six-week and eight-week sessions start on Monday,
June 27.
- Student Newspaper Earns 17 State Awards
La Voz, De Anza College’s weekly student newspaper, was honored
for general excellence in two categories — for its newspaper and for
its online publication — at this year’s Journalism Association
of Community Colleges statewide convention held in Sacramento April 7 through
9.
- De Anza College's Cheer Team Wins Top
Award in West Coast Competition
Established just three years ago, De Anza College’s cheer and dance
team won the West Coast competition of the Athletic National Championship
Series, which was held in Palm Springs in April.
- Students to Perform in Jazz, Opera and
Choral Concerts
On Friday, May 20, at 8 p.m. in Choral Hall, “An Evening of Vocal
Jazz” will feature Vocal Flight with special guests, the Oakland Jazz
Choir.
- Shannon Bracy Selected California's
Athletic Trainer of the Year
Shannon Bracy, De Anza College’s head athletic trainer, was recently
named athletic trainer of the year by the California Community College Athletic
Trainers Association.

- Learn About Asian Americans and Leadership
at the 7th Annual Youth Academy
It’s not too early for students to think about broadening their
horizons this summer. College students and high school juniors and seniors
are encouraged to explore Asian American identity, history and community issues
at the annual Summer Youth Leadership Academy, which will offered by De Anza
College’s Intercultural/International Studies Division from July 5 to
28.
- 'New Student & Parent College Night'
to Provide Answers for High School Seniors
To help make a smooth transition to college, high school seniors and their
parents are encouraged to attend De Anza College’s “New Student
& Parent College Night” that will be held on two evenings: on Tuesday,
April 19, and Thursday, May 19, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Conference Rooms A
and B of the Hinson Campus Center.
- Name Our New Parking Structure on the
East Side of Campus
For the first time in its 38-year history, De Anza College is hosting
a contest to name a major building on its campus. The entire college community,
local residents and friends of the college are encouraged to join in the fun
to name the new multilevel parking structure in Lot C that recently opened.
- The Child Development Center Is Now Managed
by Gayle Mayekawa
Gayle Mayekawa has been selected to fill a newly created position as director
of De Anza College’s Child Development Center. Her duties, which began
in full force during winter quarter, include overseeing the day-to-day operations
of the CDC.
- Speech Communication Department Named
a Model Teaching Program
De Anza College’s Speech Communication Department was presented
with the highest possible acknowledgment of excellence — the Model Teaching
Program Award — at the Western States Communication Association’s
annual conference held Feb. 21 in San Francisco.
- De Anza College Offers Personalized Audits
to Help Students Earn Degrees Quickly
It doesn’t matter where or when college students began their higher
education; De Anza College can help them finish. They can take advantage of
the college’s new free service: a personalized degree audit that will
let them know what they still need to take to earn an associate degree or
certificate.
- Art Student Kathleen Elliot Wins a
National Award for Sculpture
De Anza College art student Kathleen Elliot, who lives and operates a
glass studio in Cupertino, was one of only 19 student artists in the country
to be honored with a coveted 2005 NICHE Student Award for work based on these
criteria: technical excellence and creativity, both in surface design and
form; and a distinct quality of unique and original thought.

- De Anza College Assists Students in Various
Kinds of Transition
Many college students — whether new to higher education, in the
process of earning a degree or certificate, or returning after a number of
years — are dealing with major transitions in their lives because of
a change in their work, family and/or school situations. Students don’t
have to face these challenges alone. They can gain coping skills in a De Anza
College course titled Psychology 9, “Psychology of Human Relationships
and Normal Adjustment,” or take advantage of programs and services offered
by De Anza’s Counseling Division.
- Campus Abroad in Vietnam to Feature
Credit Courses, Excursions and Culture
For five weeks this summer, college students and lifelong learners will
have the opportunity to live and study in air-conditioned accommodations in
Saigon, take a variety of credit courses and weekend excursions, and immerse
themselves in the rich culture and history of Vietnam. Offered by the Foothill-De
Anza Community College District, the Campus Abroad program begins June 28.
Participants return to the Bay Area on Aug. 2.
- CACT Offers Two Free Seminars to Promote
the Latest in Technology and Manufacturing
Engineers, executives, educators and community leaders can learn more
about continuous quality improvement at two free technology seminars offered
by De Anza College’s Center for Applied Competitive Technologies. The
programs will be held within the next several weeks in Conference Rooms A
and B of the Hinson Campus Center at 21250 Stevens Creek Blvd., Cupertino.
- De Anza College Student Films
to Be Featured at Cinequest 2005
Two student films produced in De Anza College’s Film/Television
Program have been selected for Cinequest Film Festival 2005, which has been
ranked as one of the world’s top 10 film festivals by the Ultimate Film
Festival Survival Guide. Adriel Amirol’s and Paul
Kresge’s futuristic “Trans” and Hayato
Ando’s comic “Ramen Life” will unspool on the big
screen during the festival’s March 2 to 13 run.
- A 'Shelters on Sri Lanka' Fund-raiser
to Provide Homes for Tsunami Survivors
De Anza College will hold a fund-raiser, Shelters on Sri Lanka (or S.O.S.),
on Tuesday, Feb. 15, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Hinson Campus Center,
Conference Rooms A and B. Highlighting the event will be a panel discussion
covering a number of topics relating to Sri Lanka and the Dec. 26 tsunami.

- Information Fair Designed to Help Simplify
the Financial Aid Process
More De Anza College students than ever before are requesting and receiving
financial aid. To help make that process easier, the college’s Financial
Aid Office is holding an information fair on Wednesday, Feb. 9, from 11:30
a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Main Quad adjacent to the Hinson Campus Center.
