  • May 28, 2009 -- Topics of discussion included the importance of the June 23 Steering Committee meeting and new challenges for the placement test and in-class diagnostics for at-risk students. The team conducted a self-assessment of its progress to date with respect to the Grant goals. Positive outcomes of the year's work include: (1) the Resource Guide, (2) Identification of cohorts of at risk students, (3) research was conducted in the areas of language acquisition, student identity, BSI best practices, on-campus diversity, and current course offerings in order to find ways to improve student success (4) Grammar modules--the idea is to get them on-line someday. A comprehensive Program Review by all Departments also helped evaluate the effectiveness of student success efforts vs. student outcomes.
  • May 21, 2009 -- The positive responses from the Teaching and Learning Conference enforced the need to get the Resource Guide "out there." The team also looked at its progress to date compared to the Grant and brainstormed more effective ways to share strategies with faculty and staff. Looking forward, the team will meet with API, FYE, and SANKOFA to coordinate efforts. More upcoming plans include addressing questions from Carolyn Keen, the implementation of modules, summer meetings, a field trip for mad libs, and the Steering Committee meeting to be held June 23.
  • May 15, 2009 -- The presentation by the Team at the Teaching and Learning Conference was well attended and well received. Plans are to conduct follow-up workshops to continue working on the campus Resource Guide.
  • April 16, 2009 -- The team realized there is still a need to develop a DeAnza resource manual. The counselor shortage was discussed. An in-depth discussion of the May 15 conference covered topics of questions to use to begin discussions with participants. Ideas include: How do you assess or find out students' needs? What student problems/situations to you encounter most frequently? The idea is to get participants to share challenges and scenarios, and get input, feedback and support ideas from other participants and the team. The goal of the conference is to provide more concrete support as teachers deal with student academic and personal issues. Conference follow-up ideas include field trips to services, an updated resource guide, and a virtual workshop or online dialog to discuss challenges and situations.
  • April 9, 2009 -- The May 15 Learning and Teaching Conference was discussed. Topics included the need for a means to gather feedback from participants on many issues, including how they find out students' needs. Post conference follow-up activities might include providing  a chronically updated list of services for students  and establishing a means to follow up via email. A website would be a big asset, and the team will evaluate other college's websites.The team will gather a detailed list of current available services for students and will prepare it for distribution at the conference.
  • March 26, 2009 -- The team will study student placement packets and coordinate with Andrew to find out why students who should be placed in an ESL class are being placed in LART 200. In preparation for an upcoming meeting with Christina, Gregory and Lydia regarding analyzing student success, it was decided to ask other grant programs how they acheive student success and track it.  It was agreed that modules will need funding to be implemented. A rough agenda for the May 15 Learning and Teaching conference was discussed. The team will provide any Title III information that might be helpful to instructions.
  • March 12, 2009 -- Julie Pesano presented current plans for the Learning and Teaching Conference to be held May 15, 2009 titled "Engaging Students Where They Are".  The conference will be a series of workshops wherein strategies to improve student success, retention and intervention are presented. Discussions revolved around what types of 2 hour 15-minute workshops to present and the topics that might be most beneficial. The main goal is to make sure workshop participants are involved in the content.  Other issues of the meeting included the need for training for LART teachers and website accessibility.  Modules for grammar and vocabulary issues for 200 level students are in high demand. It was agreed that the school needs to find a way to make them available to students outside of class--they make a positive difference in student writing!
  • February 2009 -- With a recently developed list of goals and objectives, the Language Arts Team has already accomplished tasks vital to the progress of DeAnza's developmental level students in Writing and Reading.  The Language Arts Team includes:  Julie Sartwell--Instructor, Suzanne Helfman--Instructor, Ulysses Pichon--Instructor, Judy Hubbard--Instructor, and Cheryl Woodward--Counselor.  These accomplishments to date are:  thoroughly assessed student writing and student anecdotal data to determine the greatest student needs, identified at-risk factors, and designed strategies to support student success.  Our next meeting will be held on March 12, 2009 from 4:00 - 7:00pm.

Goals for LART Tracking Workgroup

  • Mentoring LART Instructors program
  • Developing methods for early detection of students at risk for not passing
  • Identifying and referring students to existing methods of support
  • Developing new support options
  • Re-structuring LARTs with a possible 11th hour to allow for a possible in-class instructional assistant: finding a way to have a required 11th hour for students to be placed in and have to account for time with needed support, including time with counselor
  • Reassessing and detecting problems with placement
  • Developing training sessions for EWRT / LART instructors
  • Developing training sessions for tutors for new support options
  • Developing options/strategies for students who fail
  • Finding ways to get counselors involved with students most at risk!!!
